About the book

Mrs. Bennet has five daughters, no son, and an estate that will pass to a cousin when her husband dies, so the arrival of a rich young bachelor at nearby Netherfield is the best news of her year. Her second daughter, Elizabeth, is quick, funny and sure of her own judgment. She takes an instant dislike to the bachelor’s proud friend Mr. Darcy, and he, against his will, cannot stop looking at her. A refused proposal, a long letter and an elopement later, both of them have had to admit how wrong a first impression can be.

Jane Austen’s 1813 novel is a comedy of manners with one of the most famous opening sentences in English. Most of it is conversation: polite on the surface, sharp underneath, and full of the irony that English readers still borrow today. The sixty-one chapters are short, which makes the book easy to read a sitting at a time with the Chinese translation beside each paragraph.

The opening of Chapter I, with the English original beside its Chinese translation, the way the reader shows it.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.

However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.

“My dear Mr. Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?”

“我亲爱的班纳特先生,”一天,他的太太对他说道,“你听说内瑟菲尔德庄园终于租出去了吗?”

Mr. Bennet replied that he had not.

“But it is,” returned she; “for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”

“可确实租出去了,”她回答道,“因为朗太太刚才来过这儿,把事情一五一十全告诉我了。”

Mr. Bennet made no answer.
